Matter of Balance Class

A little exercise every day can help improve your balance and increase your chances of staying independent and healthy longer.

Getting enough exercise doesn’t have to mean joining a gym, buying expensive equipment, or learning complicated exercise routines. In fact, many exercises that can help improve strength and balance can be done while talking on the phone or watching a favorite T.V. program. And the only equipment you’ll need is your body and a chair or table for support.

Flexibility is important to:

  • Tie your shoes
  • Clip your toenails
  • Get in and out of the tub
  • Reach items in the kitchen cupboards and on garage shelves
  • Get dressed

Strength and balance activities help:

  • Keep muscles and bones strong
  • Your ability to lift and carry things like groceries, laundry, and grandchildren
  • Improve balance and posture
  • Reduce likelihood of falls and accidents
  • Reduce bone loss

Individual Class information:

  • Class includes a variety of simple exercises including chair and standing exercises. Each individual works at his or her own pace only completing exercises they are able to do. Everyone is welcome no matter his or her exercise level, there have been individuals with blindness, in wheel chairs, and using walkers attending the class.
  • New attendants cannot begin after the second class. Each class builds on one another and it is very important to have information from prior classes.
  • Matter of Balance class is free of charge.
  • Classes incorporate short videos and one guest speaker.

A Matter of Balance class can help reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels of older adults. Regardless of the type of exercise you can gain a lot by staying physically active. Exercise can help you maintain and improve your physical fitness, it can give you the ability to do things you want to do, and it can help you with your overall balance. As you have probably noticed the key word is you. The benefits you gain will depend on your starting point and how much effort you put in. So come and let’s take steps together to prevent falls.

Matter of Balance Class is a 2-hour class twice a week for 4 weeks from 10 am- 12 pm with a 10-15 minute break half way through.  This class if Free and registration is required by calling 704-292-1797.
