Caregiver Respite Resources

We understand that taking care of an aging or chronically ill loved one can be physically and emotionally draining! Respite care options provide relief for caregivers, reducing their overall stress and preventing caregiver burnout. The Family Caregiver Support Program offers limited, temporary respite for eligible caregivers in need of a much deserved break. For more information on eligibility, contact our Family Caregiver Support Specialist at (704)-292-1797.

“This program truly has given me some tools for communication with my mother, who has dementia. This course is very helpful because it challenged me to take action for my own needs. I am a better Caregiver because I have taken the time to take these classes.”

Caregiver Support Group

Caregivers so often become overwhelmed with the vast amount of responsibilities placed on them when caring for a loved one. Our caregiver Support Group provides a safe haven for the family caregiver at no cost to participants. Here they can find much needed relief from isolation, a safe space to share their caregiver experiences, and express the difficult emotions that often accompany their caregiving role.

Our Support Group meets in-person on the 2nd and 4th Mondays from 10:15 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. at 1401 Skyway Drive in Monroe.

We also meet via Zoom on the 1st and 3rd Fridays from 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. To receive the Zoom link, call our office at (704)-292-1797.

Adult Day Programs

An adult day program provides services during the day such as meals, socialization, games and educational activities. Day programs provide the caregiver with the freedom to take a break from their caregiving responsibilities, or continue to work professionally during the day.

Our Next Door Group Respite Program is open to individuals living with cognitive or movement differences. The home-like setting enables us to create a person-centered approach to providing enriching opportunities for individuals and their caregivers. We operate on a smaller scale, with no more than twelve (12) participants per day. The low participant-to-professional ratio allows our team to find out what is important to our participants, and provide them with activities tailored to their interests.

If you are interested in learning more about Next Door, or other adult day care options in Union County, North Carolina, call our office at (704)-292-1797.

Memory Cafés

Memory Cafés are a welcoming place where caregivers can feel at ease enjoying a unique experience with their loved one and connecting with others who are on a similar journey. This is not a support group or respite program. It’s a time to unwind, play games, create art, and enjoy music in a stress-free, friendly atmosphere at no cost to you. Our Memory Cafés occur once quarterly at our Next Door Clubhouse, 104 Lydia Street in Monroe. To RSVP for our next Memory Café, call our office at (704)-292-1797.

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Our services also help to support grandparents, who may find themselves in the unique situation of caring for their young grandchildren. If you are feeling overwhelmed by this new (or continued) responsibility—You are not alone! Resources are available within our agency and other organizations within the county to assist with reducing some of the caregiver stress you may be feeling.

NEW! We have recently opened a Grandfamily Library at our office where grandparents can “check out” books on coping with the challenges of secondary parenthood. We also have books available for children who may find themselves in this new, and often overwhelming, living situation. Grandparents can keep the books as long as they need them, we simply ask that you return them when you are finished so that we may share them with others.

*In order to qualify for limited financial assistance from our FCSP, grandparents must be 55(+) years of age raising their grandchildren under 18 years of age.
